An excellent video compilation by Kees van Dijkhuizen:
“Do what you haven’t done is the key.” Sir Ridley Scott embodies that quote like no other. With a shining career of 34 years and 19 films stretching over various genres, Ridley Scott is unlike any directors I’ve featured before. It is with great pleasure I present to you the ninth episode in the series, [the films of] Ridley Scott.

Movies I love (in no particular order)
105. Gladiator (2000), dir. Ridley Scott
You wrote to me once, listing the four chief virtues: Wisdom, justice, fortitude and temperance. As I read the list, I knew I had none of them. But I have other virtues, father. Ambition. That can be a virtue when it drives us to excel. Resourcefulness, courage, perhaps not on the battlefield, but… there are many forms of courage. Devotion, to my family and to you. But none of my virtues were on your list. Even then it was as if you didn’t want me for your son.
I love this movie. I need to chill out and stop stressing out and giving myself an ulcer about Russell Crowe and the awards he deserved and didn’t get. Deep breaths.

Top 30 movies → # 19 : Gladiator
“My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next. ”
Director: Ridley Scott
Cast: Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen, Richard Harris…
Synopsis:When a Roman general is betrayed and his family murdered by a corrupt prince, he comes to Rome as a gladiator to seek revenge. This is a bit of a misleading synopsis…he doesn’t exactly choose to become a gladiator.

“People say I pay too much attention to the look of a movie but for God’s sake, I’m not producing a Radio 4 Play for Today, I’m making a movie that people are going to look at.”

Russell Crowe was continually unhappy with the screenplay, rewriting much of it to suit his own ends. He would frequently walk off the set if he didn’t get his way. The famous line “In this life or the next, I will have my vengeance” he initially refused to say, telling writer William Nicholson “Your lines are garbage but I’m the greatest actor in the world and I can make even garbage sound good”.
Not wholly true—I mean, yes, it’s a kind of weird line (the word “husband” is very awkward in a swords-sandals piece) out of context, and he delivers it exceptionally well. But, a lot of Crowe’s edits to the script were things he felt steadfast about, mainly 1. Maximus not having a love interest/sleeping around (other than with the dead wife he was seeking vengeance for) and 2. that Maximus dies. Which, in my opinion, are really big issues that I’m very glad he fought for.
